07:51 am - See through tear duct material
What are people using as the see-through tear duct material on suits with glass eyes? Is it just color buckram, or some kind of screen? What do you all use?

Thanks!

I made you a scary monster icon. Well its really a zombie icon but due to my tablet fail i had to do it with a mouse. It came out pretty well though. I hope you like it. I kinda ran into problems saving it to a correct filetype so i had to screen shot it. Over all i enjoyed drawing Hazard. It was something different. Though if you want me to make you another one when i get my tablet just let me know.

01:46 am - FurEvent - calendar now up
And, for what it's worth, now there's a simple-but-somewhat-effective grid-style calendar!

Check it out at http://www.furevent.com/event/mff2009/schedule .

There are plenty of kinks to be ironed out, of course—the days should be broken up into separate grids, and the colors should be effective, and overlapping events are tricky--but at least there's the calendar everyone knows and loves!

Also, I'm a procrastinator. So there. :)

02:44 am - Why there's so much drama around fursuits
Why is there so much drama surrounding fursuits and fursuiters? I've seen several people post comments like, "they're just animal costumes." And I can't agree more. However, to others they represent more. Sometimes MUCH more.

For a select few it's their job. However since for the heavy hitters of fursuit studios, there really is no concern over a lack or demand. For some of the smaller studios though, this may be a concern. Albeit a good reason, this probably makes up less then 1% of the drama so it is almost void.

To fully answer this question, one must deviate into what exactly a "typical furry" is. Furry is a nerdish / science fiction based fandom. It is full of socially awkward, possibly unaccepted in society people, mainly males. Another section that must be noted is the "weird, misunderstood artist." Obviously this doesnt lump EVERYONE into one category, but I believe for this purpose can be used as a generalization.

Point being is most furries have some sort of self image deficiency. Everyone has a level self consciousness, but being a nerdy/ fantasy based fandom, I believe the percentage is most likely higher then normal everyday life. So what does all this have to do with fursuit drama? Well, most furries that create a fursona or character put alot of themselves into it. Most are based somewhat directly off the person that created it. It's no secret than in a drawing or in a fursuit, you become your character, whatever it is that you created. You're not you, but rather something different, something new, something... better. For myself, Im a fairly reserved personality, but when I get into a bright blue dog costume, I enjoy playing a character that is much more "friendly" and outgoing. I do things I would never consider doing out of suit.

When you mix people with some sort of chip on their shoulder, with something they put a lot of themselves into to create something more desirable to be, it's really a recipe for disaster. Like most fantasy based subcultures, people get sucked into them or their new persona very easily. Haven't any of you watched a friend get caught up into WOW, or RP'ing, or LARPING, or even just into furry?

When you input this much passion into something that represents yourself, people are more likely to defend it. Its an extension of themselves. It's their "place." It's their "home." For many of us, it's more then just an "animal costume." Some people spend 10's of thousands of dollars commissioning art and costumes, that's how important it is to them. For that scene on paper, or that 80 minutes in character in suit, they truly are exactly what they want to be. It can be very empowering.

However, at the end of the day, it is just an animal costume. They are just drawings. They are just cartoon characters you created. Maybe it is your escape. Maybe you feel like you belong here. But when it all comes down to it, furry in it's simplest form is a hobby. A childish one too. While it may represent something more, or a chance to escape, or a way to fix a problem in your daily life, it's still cartoons and animal costumes.

01:23 am - Trip ending soon.
I am at [info]plushlover 's place now. Will be leaving tomorrow to make the 12 hour drive home. The trip went well, but I didn't have time to post what I did during my trip. Will post on that later. I did like his plush collection and took some home that he was going to give away. Hope my drive home will go smoothly.

Busy busy weekend!

On Friday I went down to Kyoto, where I delivered my after-お茶会 letter to my tea teacher (who was half-dressed in her kimono - at least she gets tired of it too). I wandered around, finally picking up WISH volume 1 (they re-released the manga, but the covers are drawn in CLAMP's ugly new style, so I went to Book Off to get all the older covers instead), before going back to the Kanbaikan and the AKP Thanksgiving party. What a party! There were decorations and handprint-turkey name tags and everything - I think their student council actually does stuff this year. I had a lot of fun seeing all the AKP students from Carleton (they're so cute!), and seeing my old host parents (they were the ones who invited me). Cone-san was also there, and I finally got her e-mail (she's currently studying at Urasenke School and I met her during the tea trip to Shigaraki). And the sensei! Yoshimura-sensei did a very otoko-yaku-esque farewell, clapping me on the shoulder and saying, またきて in her commanding voice. *swoon*

I woke up bright and early Saturday morning, and braved the cloudy, windy weather with my host mom and Yoshimi, traveling all the way to Takarazuka! We got there just in time for the 11 am showing of Casablanca by Sora-gumi. It was a fantastic show! They really kept the spirit of the movie alive while adding their own Takarazuka take on the story. The costumes were, like, exactly the same as in the movie! Ozora Yuuhi made a great Rick. ♥ There were some awkward moments... like how Sam is in the show... and how he's black in the movie... so... uh... Takarazuka version of black face. ;;; The actress was really good! It was just... uncomfortable. Oh, and I felt so bad for one of the Nazis (yes lmao) because when they were doing a song/dance number, four of them had to run to the side of the stage and do a little dance, but they were in the really high boots and she slipped and fell on her butt. ): She got right back up though, very smoothly. I still felt bad. OH and the Nazis got a car! Like... an actual car that they drove around onstage (not gasoline powered, obviously, but it still moved)!! And during the mini revue at the end, the Nazis had sparkly uniforms (well, minus the swastika armbands). I just... sparkle Nazis. But yeah it was really great, and I'm so excited to see it again on the 26th~

Yesterday I went to Tengachaya to see Yoshimi doing a mini-version of the school day with her students - they were so adorable! Little first graders doing presentations about comparing things. ♥ I went to Umeda afterwords to get some lunch, and had amazing cheese curry udon~ So good. Then I chatted with a sweet old lady who worked at a wagashi store and bought some wagashi from her.

I'm finally working more on my Amity essay (yes, still), and it's going pretty well but I am feeling a bit lost as to what it is I really want to do in life. I don't know.

But I had a good weekend!

Meet isamawarrior1, an avid BlueShineWolf fan.
She's got a ton of dogs, so I'll just post a few.

Among those dogs include:

A BBA fancharacter, I assume.

A fursona.

Not Assuva.

Totally not Assuva.

A horrible misuse of the Photoshop Burn tool.

And she shares her AMAZING ideas. Adopt one today!

12:42 am - i had a revelation
and this is it

GET EXCITED

MAKE STUFF

BE HAPPY

if the above isn't working out for you,

you might be doing it wrong.

i love what i do, and i hope that you can love what you do, too. make artwork for you, make it for the sole act of making something, make it for the process and the pride in your finished work, and have fun sharing it -- why let anything else dictate how you feel?

i'm feeling a lot better about some things. staying objective, keeping your friends close to you, and knowing why you do what you do sure does put a whole new light on things. there might be money involved, but you are still making work for you -- the act of CREATING artwork is a very selfish and personal thing -- whether you are painting, making costumes, drawing in the park -- why are you letting anything drag you down? sharing work, making profit, getting compliments is only the ICING ON THE CAKE -- chill out and make things and remember WHY YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU DO. KEEP YOUR HANDS AND YOUR MIND BUSY. IF YOU FIND NO LOVE IN WHAT YOU GO THROUGH TO CREATE A FINISHED PIECE, FIND ANOTHER OUTLET. JUST KEEP MAKING THINGS.

peace

Going back 375 entries on [info]fanmix under the Supernatural tag (because after that it defaults to day view)...out of those 375 entries there are:

- 95 solo fanmixes
- 67 general fanmixes (either the show in general, a theme or a specific episode)
- 25 heterosexual mixes (not counting crossover mixes)

Everything else? Sam/Dean, Sam/Castiel, Sam or Dean slash some other random male character or threesomes with Sam and Dean. And this tiny, tiny handful of femslash mixes (Anna/Ruby, Ruby/Bela, Jo/Jess). And, weirdly enough, a few Dean/Ruby (SOMEONE EXPLAIN THAT LOGIC TO ME) mixes. HEY WHERE'S THE MIXES FOR BOBBY? HUH? IS BOBBY NOT COOL ENOUGH FOR YOU GUYS? OR PAMELA?? There was a Trickster mix as well as an Azrael mix. So go figure.

God, that's so, so, SO sad.

WHY SO MUCH GAY, SPN FANDOM?

BUT I FOUND DEAN/ANNA MIXES. AND DEAN/JO MIXES. AND ANNA/CASTIEL MIXES. SO THAT'S PRETTY COOL.

We went out to Angie's this weekend because he computer pretty much crashed and burned and she needed my HALP.

I spent, no shit, at least twenty hours fixing it. It was giving a blue screen on bootup and I couldn't even boot into safe mode. So I had to spend time burning stuff onto disc from TJ's laptop to try on her computer. Everything from drivers to, what eventually made progress, booting up past Windows with Puppy Linux (which, oh my god, was a lifesaver). Eventually, I got her stuff backed up and I reformatted the OS partition and did a fresh install of XP.

Three times.

I accidentally did a parallel install and then things weren't working quite right on the newer install, so I just did a proper (not quick) format and everything is dandy now!

I felt pretty accomplished.

We had taken the 360 so we could watch Supernatural with Angie, but I forgot the TV cable. DURP. But we ended up watching gag reels for Supernatural (because they're pretty much spoiler-less) and FRUITHAT. Also, the Top 100 Song of the 90s which just made me feel OLD and NOSTALGIC.

We also did retarded headpeople stuff because we're fuckin' awesome.

Now, TJ and I are fighting. Pfft. Go figure. It's been awhile though, was probably coming anyhow.
